GENERAL REFLECTION: WEEK 3 (02.08.2025)
On 2nd August 2025, we had our general reflection session as part of Phase 1 of our teaching practice. The session took place in the general hall at 11:00 a.m., in the presence of our Principal Dr. Roy Sir, along with Sreedevi Miss, Shamla Miss, Shyam Sir, and Rakhi Miss. Attendance was low, with many student teachers absent. The session began with Roy Sir welcoming everyone and formally initiating the discussion. He began by outlining the upcoming schedule, informing us that we were permitted to remain in our practice schools until 14th August, by which time we were expected to complete the portions allotted to us. He also mentioned that we would report back to the college on 18th August. Following this, one representative from each school was invited to share their three-week teaching experiences.
Aarathi represented Karukone School and shared her collective experience, including the positive and supportive attitude of the HM and teachers, as well as her personal experiences. Reeba from Sabarigiri HSS spoke about how she helped students develop a liking for the subject but faced challenges with blackboard use due to an allergy. Kripa from Edamulackal Jawahar shared her success in maintaining discipline and classroom management. Keerthi from All Saints School, Puthayam, spoke about improvements in her voice modulation and blackboard usage. I represented Karavaloor School and highlighted the negative experiences, mentioning that teacher trainees there faced avoidance and unwelcoming attitudes, which made teaching uncomfortable. Aravind from Vayala School mentioned the difficulty of teaching in overcrowded classrooms with over 60 students. Alaka from Jawahar HSS Ayur shared the opposite issue—very low student strength, with only 12 students in Standard 8. Shamnad from VVHSS Poredom shared that the teachers give them more work and the students believe they are the real teachers. Silla from Yeroor GHSS expressed that they don’t even get a single free period in a day, as every hour is assigned with substitutions. Stephy from St Goretti HSS, Punalur shared that in her school, the teacher always comes and sits in the classroom while they are teaching, for monitoring. Gloria from West HSS shared her bad experience during the general observation, where she was not given enough time to perform properly.
Later, our optional subject teachers shared their observations from classroom visits. Sreedevi Miss (Natural Science) noted that her first observation was in a class at Karukone. She observed that the student wasn’t fully prepared at the time, which allowed her to offer constructive suggestions. She also appreciated me for taking the initiative to buy a projector for better teaching. She concluded that the surprise observation method was effective and yielded honest outcomes. Shamla Miss (English) observed that many student teachers appeared nervous during classroom observations and wished everyone success for the rest of the teaching practice. Shyam Sir (Physical Science) emphasized the need for improvement in classroom management and neatness in chart preparation. Rakhi Miss (Social Science) remarked that although surprise visits created panic among some trainees, the overall experience was fruitful and enlightening.
The session concluded at 1:15 p.m. After lunch, we had a session with Sreedevi Miss, our option teacher. She signed our lesson plans, reflective journals, and reviewed our rough diagnostic question papers. She also gave us further instructions and tips to better prepare for the upcoming phase of teaching practice.
