INTERNATIONAL DAY OF OLDER PERSONS

DATE : OCTOBER 1

On October 1, 2024, Sabarigiri College observed the International Day of Older Persons, aligning with the globally recognized theme: "Embracing the Dignity of Age: Strengthening Support Systems for Older Persons." This United Nations-designated day, established in December 1990, seeks to promote a deeper understanding of the valuable contributions and inherent rights of older adults within society.

The phenomenon of population aging is profoundly impacting communities worldwide, necessitating a heightened focus on promoting the well-being, dignity, and inclusivity of older persons. This day serves as a poignant reminder of the need to address pressing issues such as ageism, equitable access to healthcare, and the creation of supportive environments that foster healthy aging.

Moreover, the International Day of Older Persons celebrates the remarkable achievements and ongoing contributions of older adults in various spheres of life, including social, economic, and civic engagement. At Sabarigiri College, a dedicated group of NSS volunteers, guided by NSS Coordinator Jaseena Miss, commemorated the occasion by taking a solemn pledge to reaffirm their commitment to caring for and supporting older individuals.

Led by NSS volunteer Ameena, the pledge emphasized the vital importance of treating older persons with dignity, respect, and compassion, while ensuring their overall well-being. This thoughtful initiative underscores the college's unwavering dedication to cultivating awareness, empathy, and responsibility towards the older generation, thereby promoting a culture of care and inclusivity within the community.
